Medicare Advantage Plans (also called Part C) are an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. These plans are offered by private insurance carriers approved by Medicare and combine your hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) coverage into one plan.
Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D) and may offer additional benefits not included in Original Medicare.
When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan:
You must continue paying your Medicare Part B premium
You may have an additional plan premium (many plans have $0 premiums)
You receive your Medicare benefits through the private insurance carrier instead of directly through Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage plans are required to provide at least the same level of coverage as Original Medicare, but they often include extra benefits.
Coverage varies by plan, but most include:
Hospital coverage (Part A)
Medical coverage (Part B)
Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
Dental, vision, and hearing benefits
Fitness memberships
Transportation assistance
Over-the-counter allowances
There are several types of plans available:
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) – Requires you to use in-network doctors.
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) – More flexibility to go out-of-network (usually at a higher cost).
Special Needs Plans (SNPs) – Designed for people with specific health conditions or dual eligibility.

Network restrictions may apply
Prior authorizations may be required

Plans change annually
That’s why reviewing your coverage every year during Annual Enrollment is important.
